I CAN’T say I was looking forward to reviewing Five Finger Death Punch’s new album, Got Your Six.

Whether it was the giant cartoon on the front cover of a large muscley zombie-looking creature, cutting swathes through other zombies with a baseball bat and saw, or the picture of the band on the back snarling and holding various weaponry that put me off, I couldn’t say.

Although you can’t fault these five friends for having the time of their lives, screaming, shouting, rapping and generally rocking out, all too often they fall into a pattern of repetitive choruses and clichés: “There’s a daemon inside, just like Jekyll and Hyde.”- anyone?

Having said that the songs are very catchy and the vocals very strong and powerful. The songs often have a political, questioning slant like on Wash It All Away. Other highlights for me were My Nemesis, Hell to Pay and Question Everything. There’s no questioning these chaps can wring every gloriously enunciated power chord from their guitars and smash the life out of a pair of drums. In that respect they really are living the dream.

I think a live gig would be a lot of fun, but I can’t see this album sitting in many of the record collections of our Radio 2 inclined listeners.
