CONCERT REVIEW

Weymouth Lunchtime Chamber Concert, St Mary's Church, September 9

WHAT a joy to hear the opening lunchtime chamber concert of the season in St Mary's Church, Weymouth, on Wednesday September 9.

Virginia Black on the piano dazzled the audience with her performances of Baroque music.

She first displayed her talents in public when she won the under 9s class at Birmingham Music Festival.

After an amazingly distinguished career, both as harpsichord professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London and as the world's most famous harpsichord soloist, Virginia returned to her roots as a solo pianist, mainly of Baroque music.

On Wednesday she dazzled the audience with her recordings of music by J.S. Bach , Jean Philippe Rameau, Damenico Scarlatti and W.A. Mozart.

Virginia's technique is incredible. Her fingers flew over the keys until they were almost invisible.

What is more, she was deeply expressive, perhaps most of all in the sonata which Mozart wrote, just after the death of his mother.

A wonderful start to the season.

*The next Weymouth lunchtime chamber concert will be on September 30in St Mary's Church, Weymouth at 1pm with Christopher Horner on the violin and Duncan Honeybourne on the piano.
