MUCH wisdom can be gleaned from folk singer Kate Rusby, if one listens carefully.

Her songs deal with love, advice on travelling and a varied assortment of sad, happy, drinking and thinking songs. These were among the treats to a packed auditorium at Poole’s Lighthouse on Friday evening.

Rusby and band played at the venue as part of a city-wide autumn tour of the UK.

Drawn in by her reputation as one of the UK’s top folk singers, the audience wasn’t disappointed. Rusby’s 20-year career has seen her release a single with Ronan Keating, and have her music used on the TV sitcom Jam & Jerusalem, and become a regular headliner at folk festivals.

The Yorkshire-based singer has also released 11 solo albums, of which new songs from her latest album Ghost were played this evening.

Full of chat and banter, she explained how the album and its title song were inspired by a suspected spectre living in her house – though since she wrote the song, it hadn’t shown its face.

Finishing to an enthusiastic applause, one hopes she won’t leave it too long before she comes our way again.
