THE music of your teens is the stuff that sticks with you and reminds you of the days you were free and ready to take on the world.

For me that music was from the eighties, when Britain dominated the pop world with some of the most iconic artists.

And what’s more quintessentially eighties than Nik Kershaw, Go West and Carol Decker of T’Pau, brought together for a night of nostalgia at the Pavilion?

La Decker retains her trademark nasal twang and flowing Titian locks. She amused the crowd by saying she had supported Nik in the eighties and was still supporting him now!

Bedecked in a military style red leather coat and skinny jeans, Decker still looks really good and belted out her songs in familiar style.

Though I was never a fan, Carol proved she still has that vocal power and stage presence with hits including Heart and Soul and China in Your Hand.

Then on to the main attractions – Kershaw’s spiky up-do has been swapped for a modest grey crop and neat beard, lead vocalist Peter Cox’s hair has gone south rather than west and Richard Drummie sports a slightly careworn demeanour.

Despite all that, though, these guys are still all over the music, displaying every bit as much talent and commitment as they did 30 years ago.

Cox and Kershaw are still bang on it vocally, with solid support from Drummie on guitar and keyboards and a very talented backing band.

Cox is still winning over the ladies with that cheeky smile and distinctive voice. And Kershaw is a force to be reckoned with as a songwriter and performer – the complexity of some of his songs is frankly mind-boggling.

You can’t argue with classics like Go West’s King of Wishful Thinking, We Close Our Eyes and Don’t Look Down or Kershaw’s Wouldn’t It Be Good, I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me and The Riddle.

Predictably the crowd, mainly in their 40s and 50s, lapped it all up and spread the love. It didn’t take long for most people in the packed theatre to be on their feet clapping and grooving with the heroes of their youth.

Those eighties legends couldn’t be in any doubt that there’s a place for them on stage with this crowd anytime.
