With a UK tour taking in cities from Doncaster to Canterbury, Breakin’ Convention came to Bournemouth Pavilion for its final stop.

Supported by the acclaimed Sadler’s Wells, British hip hop’s biggest advocate Jonzi D created and has been hosting this annual event since 2004.

He was assisted tonight by ex B-boy Paul “LaceMaster” Spencer, now a Bournemouth Council Survey Officer by day, who was a fundamental part of a long weekend of fantastic breaking and hip hop events and competitions in the town in conjunction with hip hop charity All Elements, Second to None and Pavilion Dance.

Breakin’ Convention featured acts “from around the world and around the corner”, bringing together a mix of local dance talent as well as internationally acclaimed acts from France, Spain and the Netherlands.

Top local crews Shake and DFA (Dance For All) were joined by Portsmouth based Odyssey, all renowned for their competition successes and performances, along with the upcoming SwagOut Revolutionz from Reading. Their pieces ranged from the hard hitting theme of Paris terrorism (perhaps a little heavy for the family audience) to the upbeat 1940s/modern day comparison of differing dance styles.

Spanish group Iron Skulls Co made a dramatic auditorium entrance with torch lights and gas masks before wowing with their seamlessly synchronised and acrobatic piece Sinestesia. In contrast, French soloist Antoinette Gomis moved and mesmerised with her piece Images exploring the lack of pride black women have suffered throughout history.

The best really was saved til last with the unbelievable jaw dropping performance from Netherlands group The Ruggeds. Their 18 minute piece Adrenaline was a non stop action packed display, pushing the limits of dance and acrobatics with its incredibly intricate choreography and tricks. A rapturous standing ovation was much deserved as each of its 8 members gave their all, maintaining fun and humour along with innovative and magical moves.

A fantastic event all round, proving that both local and international acts can share a stage and deliver a vibrant programme of diverse and talented dance. Looking forward to Breakin’ Convention 2017 already!
