CONCERT REVIEW
WEYMOUTH LUNCHTIME CHAMBER CONCERT
ST MARY'S CHURCH
ARGUABLY the very best Weymouth Lunchtime Chamber Concert in the 2015/16 series took place in St Mary' sChurch at 1pm.
The musicians were the Wessex Piano Quartet - Catrin Win Morgan on violin, Stephanie Chambers on viola, Sally Hann on cello and Duncan Honeybourne on piano.
All four musicians have received awards and critical acclaim; for example, BBC Music Magazine wrote of Duncan's CD of his own solo piano works: - 'hard to imagine better performances'.
And we were treated to live music from all four musicians, naturally interwoven and played to the very highest of standards.
They played two works - Mozart's Piano Quartet in G minor (1785) and Brahms' Piano Quartet in C minor, Op. 60 (1875).
The Mozart delighted the audience with its elegance and charm, not to mention the beautiful hummable tunes.
Then, 100 years later came romantic Brahms - an 'extraordinary work' full of power and drama, where the piano often dominated and the music became louder and more sinister right up to its spectacular end.
*This is the last of the 2015/2016 Weymouth lunchtime concerts. Next year's concerts will begin on December 21 2016, owing to building works in St Mary's Church.
