LAST NIGHT OF THE BSO PROMS

Weymouth Pavilion

A FULL house, a cheering, flag-waving audience begging for multiple encores, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra know how to please the crowd and they certainly did that with a concert that ticked all the boxes for programme content and expertise.

It is a privilege to hear a world-famous orchestra play much-loved classical favourites of the past which stirred British patriotism and revived memories, bringing a sense of enthusiasm and goodwill to the packed audience who had braved the traffic chaos outside caused by a film making crew deconstructing the harbour.

Under the baton of Frank Zielhorst, the orchestra delivered with sparkle and verve the Star Wars theme and the Eugene Onegin waltz and Polonaise along with the usual Promenade concert perennials such as the Pomp and Circumstance March and Jerusalem to which everybody sang along.

Especially interesting were radio themes such as the Coronation Scot and Sailing By which older listeners surely enjoyed for recapturing past days before television dominated family leisure time.

Following such a rapturous reception by Weymouth, it can only be hoped that the orchestra may renew its once-frequent visits to the Pavilion and it was interesting to note that the commentator’s remarks about the revival of the town’s theatre were received with shouts of approval by the audience.

Their next Dorset appearance is at Meyrick Park, Bournemouth from Friday August 5th to Sunday 7th when they perform, among other things, an Abba spectacular.
