Well. Never let it be said that theatre is dead while The Rocky Horror Show is still on the scene.

The Pavilion was very much alive and kicking as the cult 1970s rock n roll musical sashayed and high-kicked its way into town for a six night run.

Fans lived up to their reputation, turning out in fancy dress costumes comprising sequins, feather boas, high heels and plenty of flesh on display.

For Rocky Horror virgins out there, it tells the story of a newly engaged couple getting caught in a storm and stumbling into the home of a mad transvestite scientist about to unveil his Frankenstein-style monster.

But that's not really the point of the show, by Richard O'Brien.

Half its charm lies in the audience participation, as they sing and dance along, and heckle to their hearts' content.

Anything goes, there are no taboos and the result is a riotous party packed with double entendres, suspenders and a lot of laughs.

This Ambassador Theatre Group production proved to be no exception. Former X Factor 2008 contestant Diana Vickers was fantastic as Janet, who starts the show as an innocent young fiancee.

Norman Pace - of comedy duo Hale and Pace - was even better as the Narrator, our friendly guide for the night who came up with some great, quick abd topical retorts to the heckles.

And Dominic Andersen made a delectable Rocky, the scientist's scantily clad creation. The dazzling set was also a sight to behold, dripping in sequins and undergoing several quick changes.

But I think Liam Tamne deserves the most praise, who put in a gloriously camp turn as Dr. Frank N Furter and belted out some of the best numbers, including Sweet Transvestite and Damn it Janet.

The Time Warp and its famous dance routine brought the Pavilion audience to its feet more than once and the popularity of this show - a tribute to science fiction and horror B movies - made perfect sense.

It's not just great music, laughs and fabulous outfits (most of the cast end up wearing suspenders). It's riotous, risque fun that also seems to be about being whatever you want.

I'd do the Time Warp again - but next time in fancy dress!

Rocky Horror runs until August 27.
