WEYMOUTH MUSIC CLUB

ST MARY'S CHURCH, WEYMOUTH

The Weymouth Music Club celebrated the start of their seventy first concert season last weekend with a programme given by a String Quartet and a solo Piano.

The prize winning Jubilee Quartet has four members, each one a part of a distinguished group of young female players who have impressed many audiences in the UK and abroad.

Adding to the content of a thoroughly enjoyable concert was the piano playing of Duncan Honeybourne, who lives locally and has a similar very distinguished academic and performance background.

The first offering was one of Schubert’s fifteen String Quartets, followed immediately by an Intermezzo by Brahms. The piano was then introduced with consummate ease in a Schubert Impromptu, approached in an introspective and personal mood. A blend of romance, magic and passion.

The second half of the concert featured Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F minor, Op.34, which displayed technical excellence all round. Variations embracing both the higher and the lower reaches of the tonal range provided by strings and piano, skilful harmonising, resounding deep chords and an emphatic, confident conclusion, brought to an end a very rewarding musical experience for musicians and audience alike.

The next Weymouth Sunday concert will be the Carducci Quartet at 3pm on Sunday November 6th at Weymouth Bay Church.
