Bournemouth has long been synonymous with holidays.

So it's no surprise that Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis and his team chose the town to film a special live show focusing on helping people save cash on their annual get-away.

The TV presenter and financial guru will be filming at the end of Bournemouth Pier on Tuesday, and is urging members of the public to come along and take part in the live show.

"It's a one-hour, live special," Martin tells Seven Days.

"With the Martin Lewis Money Show we ran a series of half-hour programmes around November to February, but then throughout the year we are experimenting with one-hour, live specials.

"We are doing holidays, so we wanted to come somewhere beautiful in Britain that's known for its holiday spirit - so we thought of Bournemouth.

"We're very pleased that we've got one of the jewels in the south coast."

Martin promises the show will be "a lot of fun", and says he'll be engaging with the public and answering any of their questions about holiday-related money issues.

"A lot of it's about going abroad, so it's about currency, sun cream, car hire, insurance, when you should buy your money and how for going abroad. Also about staycations in the UK, so it's a big mix," he explains.

"I prefer the audience set the agenda rather than me. On the night we leave about 15 to 20 minutes for audience questions. The people that turn up know what I'm going to talk about as much as I do - that's why I like it."

But Martin, 45, also has a question for the people of Bournemouth: "To do some of the filming, we went to Spain - we were there in Torremolinos and it was absolutely peeing it down, torrential rain and wind. We had terrible trouble filming - we only got one day's filming.

"So the question is - how is Bournemouth's weather going to perform on the night? What you want is Bournemouth to look beautiful and Spain to be raining!"

It's just as well that Martin enjoys interacting with his fans - he often gets stopped by the public asking for financial advice.

"Other people get asked for selfies, I get 'can I ask you a question?' he jokes.

But it's clear he wouldn't have it any other way.

"It's fun knowing a lot," he says.

"I started off as a young, fresh-faced whizz kid - I can't quite pull that off any more, but I'm not actually interested in me, that's never what drove me. I always wanted to go and talk about money.

"If you can't afford something, then you can't have it. If you want to empower people and make a difference in people's lives, the most important thing is to help them put some cash in their pocket so they can do what they want to do.

"The passion is from that, rather than some inherent meanness - it's about helping your money go further to get the life that you want from it."

Martin, who read government and law at the London School of Economics, and was a postgraduate broadcast journalism student at Cardiff University Centre for Journalism Studies, admits he spends his savings on "going on holiday to nice places", but remains humble at being able to do what he loves.

"I was lucky", he shrugs.

"Some people are born with the ability to sit at a piano and play music. I can look at credit card conditions. It's not as glamorous, but it's effective."
