This year's Oscars kicked off with host Seth MacFarlane introducing the show - with a little help from Captain Kirk and Harry Potter.

Family Guy creator Seth was joined in a sketch by a videolink featuring William Shatner as Captain Kirk, before Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe then joined Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth on stage to sing High Hopes.

Christoph Waltz won the first big award of the night when he was named best supporting actor for Django Unchained. The actor praised the film's director and his "hero" Quentin Tarantino for his work on the western.

The award for best animated short film went to Disney's Paperman, while Pixar's Brave won the gong for best animated feature film. The best cinematography award went to Claudio Miranda for Life Of Pi, and the film also picked up the Oscar for visual effects.

The award for costume design went to British designer Jacqueline Durran for Anna Karenina. There was another UK win when the Oscar for make-up and hairstyling was won by Lisa Westcott and Julie Dartnell for Les Miserables.

Les Miserables won the Oscar for best sound mixing and there was a tie for the award for best sound editing which was shared between Zero Dark Thirty and Skyfall. Anne Hathaway won the gong for best supporting actress for her role in Les Miserables. An emotional Anne said: "It came true," and thanked her co-stars including Hugh Jackman.

Sandra Bullock presented the Oscar for film editing to William Goldenberg for Argo, while the gong for production design to Lincoln. The Oscar for best original score went to Mychael Danna for Life of Pi while Adele and songwriting partner Paul Epworth won the Oscar for best original song for the Bond theme Skyfall.

The Oscar for adapted screenplay went to Chris Terrio for Argo, while Quentin Tarantino won original screenplay gong for Django Unchained. Ang Lee won the best director Oscar for Life Of Pi and thanked the "movie God" and a "wonderful cast" who he said were "a golden statue in my heart".

The Oscar for best actress went to Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook. Accepting the Oscar for best actor from Meryl Streep, Lincoln star Daniel Day-Lewis said: "I really don't know how any of this happened, I do know I've received more than my fair share of good fortune in my life".

The nominees for best film were introduced by first lady Michelle Obama from the White House, before she named Argo as the winner. Director and star Ben Affleck paid tribute to the "genius" Steven Spielberg whose film, Lincoln, lost out in the category.
