Singer Bobby Brown has been sentenced to 55 days in a Los Angeles jail and four years of probation for drink-driving.

City attorney's spokesman Frank Mateljan said the former husband of singer Whitney Houston was sentenced after pleading no contest to being under the influence and driving on a suspended licence when he was arrested in October.

Brown was on probation for another drink-drive case at the time.

The 44-year-old New Edition singer was ordered to report to jail on March 20, placed on four years of informal probation and must complete an 18-month alcohol treatment programme.

Brown's lawyer Tiffany Feder had no immediate comment on the sentence.

Houston, 48, who battled drug addiction, drowned in a Beverly Hills hotel bath last February. She was married to Brown for 15 years.
