Hollywood star Eddie Redmayne said he found the amount of media coverage of him being spotted on the Tube “a bit odd”.

Oscar winner Eddie, 34, who was collecting an OBE for services to drama at an investiture ceremony hosted by the Queen at Windsor Castle, said he had always travelled on the London Underground.

Joined by his wife and his parents at the ceremony, a bemused Eddie said: “How else do you get around in London? I’ve always travelled on the Tube and I love the Tube, so it felt a bit odd.”

Eddie was named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in June 2015 – a career-defining year for the star in which he picked up an Academy Award for his portrayal of Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything.

On receiving his honour, he said: “It was absolutely wonderful. Also being with such extraordinary people the whole experience is incredibly humbling and also getting to be in Windsor Castle is breathtaking, around Christmas as well with all the decorations.”

Pressed on what the Queen had said to him, the Danish Girl star said: “She was asking me whether I prefer film or theatre, and asked me if I enjoyed it.

“I’m very lucky to do something I am passionate about – I’m very grateful to do something I love because it is a rare thing.”

Eddie said it was “an extraordinary thing” to receive his OBE, adding: “It is something that I had never thought of and it was never in my wildest imagination.”

One of Britain’s top heartthrobs, Eddie married long-term girlfriend Hannah Bagshawe in December 2014, and the couple have a baby daughter called Iris May.

The actor, who was in the same year as the Duke of Cambridge at Eton College, is currently starring in Harry Potter-inspired film Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.

Having spent a lot of time recently promoting the film, he said a “little break” is next on his agenda so he can “spend time” with his wife and little girl and also “eat a lot of ham”.

He said being a parent was “wonderful”, adding: “Except she does have the habit of knowing when you have a big day, like today.

“And she was up until four in the morning, so both my wife and I came today with matchsticks under our eyes. Other than that she is on cracking form.”
