THE internationally acclaimed South West Music School (SWMS) is still looking for young performing musicians aged between eight and 16, plus composers aged between 13 and 17, to join its ranks.

SWMS spokeswoman Kate Wemmell said: “Our programme is inclusive, ranging from Bach to blues, folk to funk and minimalism to metal.

"We are open to all, regardless of musical or personal background and do not divert students away from their current schooling or music provision, but instead seek to enhance and compliment it through support and other opportunities”.

“SWMS provides students with the same standard of music education as specialist music schools and junior conservatoires.

“The additional benefit of SWMS is that it allows students to stay in their existing school and continue to take part in other current musical (and non-musical) activities in their local communities.”

South West Music School is an amazing opportunity for talented young musicians and composers in our region to develop their skills further”.

Core Programme student Jack Southorn, a 16-year-old singer/songwriter from Portland, has been part of the scheme for three years.

He said: “Being a student on the Core Programme has really opened me up as a musician, and given me the opportunity to work with other like-minded, inspiring musicians. Having a mentor to support me along my musical pathway has been so beneficial.”

Dorchester-based Lucy Breakwell, 10, a vocalist in her first year with SWMS, added: “The workshops are a lot of fun and have moulded me into a well-rounded musician.”

South West Music School has 30 places available for musicians on its Feeder Scheme, where successful instrumentalists and vocalists spend a year before re-auditioning to fill places of graduating students on the Core Programme.

SWMS is looking for young musicians with a sense of authority and clarity and who are musically informed.

There are also ten places on the Composers Programme. Successful applicants will join the programme and be provided with an individual mentor/tutor and attend three residential courses throughout the year.

Deadline for applications is Friday, May 9 2014 and all details of the application and audition process can be found by visiting swms.org.uk or contacting info@swms.org.uk or 01392 460770.
