THE gap between youth theatre and ‘drama clubs for grown-ups’ is about to be filled by a vibrant new group for would-be actors, directors and stagehands aged between 18 and 29.

The small Theatre Company is meeting for the first time in Martinstown village hall on April 14 and anyone interested in joining is urged to come along.

The company was founded by Mike Hayes and Jess Mitchell, who both have links to Dorchester Drama.

Mike said: “I looked around and realised that if you leave school at 18 and don’t particularly like or play sport, there’s nothing for you to do.

“There’s quite a gap between youth theatre and drama clubs, which draw an older crowd, and it seemed an ideal opportunity to get something started.

“Jess is a brilliant motivator and we have already got 11 people talking about coming plus a number of patrons.”

Members of The small Theatre Company will have complete autonomy. Once the group is established, Mike and Jess will stand back and let them choose what plays they perform, produce and direct.

There are also plans for a series of workshops including a scriptwriters course.

“There are so many options we can explore, from performing street theatre to taking our shows to old people’s homes,” said Mike.

“It’s about community and giving something back. I think it is a very exciting venture.”

The small Theatre Company will meet in Martinstown village hall near Dorchester on Mondays, from 8pm to 10pm, starting on April 14.

Membership is £20 per annum, or £7 per term if you prefer a ‘try out’ to start with. The first production will be on July 12.
