GREASE, the fast moving rock ’n’ roll musical, is this Easter’s production by WOW Youth Musical Theatre, which will be staged at the Pavilion Theatre Wednesday April 9 to Saturday, April 12.

Grease is the original high school musical, featuring unforgettable songs from the hit movie including You’re The One That I Want, Summer Nights, Hopelessly Devoted To You, Greased Lightnin’ and many more. Add to that the electrifyin’ dance moves and you have thrills galore in this sizzling show.

The show is being directed and choreographed by former WOW member Martine Burt. Martine has recently received the 2013 NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) South West award for outstanding choreography on WOW’s previous show.

In 1990, Martine saw WOW perform Grease at the Pavilion and was motivated to audition for the group. This was the foundation to her successful professional career and Martine said: “I hope this production of Grease will inspire the next generation of young people to develop their talents through musical theatre.”

The roles made famous by John Travolta and Olivia Newton John in the film version go to 16-year-old Callum Heinrich and 18-year-old Imogen Carter, both playing leads for the first time.

The cast of 44 has been enjoying a great time at floor rehearsals working with Martine together with musical director Heather Reed and assistant director Paul Jones.

In 1990, Grease cost nearly £9,000 to stage. This production is costing over £30,000 and WOW chairman, Alan McKechan said, “We hope that this thrilling show will prove as much of a box office success as it did the last time WOW performed it.”

Grease, with music and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, was first performed in Chicago in 1971. The musical is set in 1959 at fictional Rydell High School. It follows 10 working-class teenagers as they navigate the complexities of love against a score that recreates the sounds of early rock ’n’ roll. From a Chicago fringe theatre to Broadway, Grease has been successful on both stage and screen running as one of the longest in Broadway history. It went on to become a West End hit and a hugely successful film.

It remains Broadway’s 15th longest-running show.

The recent West End production has seen two former WOW members, Kerry Winter and Chloe Brooks (now Tweed) performing on separate occasions and both sharing the same role!
