The RSPB is running a special guided walk on Friday to listen and look for the elusive nightjar.
It leaves the car park below Hardy’s Monument, off the coast road, between Weymouth and Bridport, at 9.30pm.
The bird of heathland, they are not easily seen or known because they only spend the summer in the UK returning to Africa during the winter months and are active during the night, especially at dawn and dusk when they hunt for their favourite food, moths.
They have incredible markings that help them blend into their surroundings while they rest up on the heath during the day and are only rarely seen in daylight hours. Wild Weymouth Discovery Centre assistant Daniel Bartlett who will be leading the RSPB walk, said: “Many people have heard the eerie sound of the nightjars call without even realising it.
“It is one of the most commonly used sound-effects in the film industry. Why not do something a bit different this Friday night and join the RSPB for a summer evening walk at Hardy’s Monument?”
The event runs from 9.30pm to 11.30pm. Meet at DCCl car park just below Hardy’s Monument. It costs £6 for non RSPB members, £4 for RSPB members, £3 for children and WEX members go free. Call 01305 778313 to book your place.
