A GROUND-BREAKING play will be premiered in Bridport next week.

New York writer and producer Paul Lucas is bringing Trans Scripts to The Lyric Theatre in Barrack Street ahead of performances in London.

Trans Scripts will eventually become a fully staged production in Adelaide, Australia, in November.

The theatre piece is similar in format to The Vagina Monologues and brings theatrical form to the real stories and actual words of transgender people from around the world.

Trans Scripts is described as an ‘unflinching investigation’ into the transgender journey, exploring the oft-overlooked ‘T’ in the LGBT acronym.

Paul said: “We’re doing this in Bridport because I’ve known Niki, the artistic director at the Lyric, since the late 90s.

“We hit it off when we met in Edinburgh and decided we’d like to work together and The Lyric was a perfect fit for us.”

Director Charles Sanders who lives in Adelaide, said he and Paul were enjoying staying in Bridport, where they were being hosted by friends of the Lyric Theatre.

“For city people, it’s so nice to be away from the hustle and bustle and being somewhere clean and quiet.

“You might think that away from the city people would be narrow-minded, but they’re not.

“People are really excited about meeting different people.

“These issues are so prevalent now,” he said.

The Bridport performances, on Wednesday and Thursday, mark the World Premiere reading of the full script.

The historic Lyric Theatre reopened in 2010, under the direction of Niki, and is a base for the Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company.

Performances will take place on Wednesday, June 25 and Thursday, June 26 at 8pm at The Lyric Theatre, 9 Barrack Street, Bridport, Dorset DT6 3LX.
