SOME Maori soul is coming to Dorset.

Pacific Curls are bringing their evocative vocals all the way from New Zealand to Buckland Newton tomorrow night and Swanage on Friday courtesy of Artsreach.

The trio has travelled the world with their unique brand of sensational music, that is both enthralling and transglobal.

With a cornerstone of backbeat Pacific rhythms, vivacious fiddle playing and evocative Maori vocals, lyrics and instrumen-tation, Pacific Curls have pioneered a fusion sound that seamlessly blends their indigenous roots.

The group’s two special nights in Dorset with Artsreach come ahead of them moving on to Somerset, Devon and Cornwall as part of a bigger South West rural tour.

They have an impressive instrumental collection, which features the ukulele, cajon, fiddle, Taonga Puoro (traditional Maori instruments), guitar, stomp box and kalimba.

With lyrics performed in Te Reo Maori, Rotuman and English, Pacific Curls have gained a rapidly growing international reputation, following their appearances at several WOMAD festivals and at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver , as well as regular worldwide touring.

Their use of traditional Celtic tunes, expressive vocals, political and moving lyrics in Maori and English and their skill with world instruments combines to create a distinctive sound with a contemporary and intriguing edginess.

During their visit to Dorset, the trio will also be running a special Maori and Pacific Songs singing workshop in Piddle Valley First School in Piddletrenthide tonight, from 7pm to 9pm, offering singers of all abilities the opportunity to learn a number of traditional songs and participate in a remarkable vocal tradition.
