DES O’CONNOR

Weymouth Pavilion

HOW many entertainers could regale you with stories about their association with stars like Buddy Holly, Frank Sinatra and Morecombe and Wise to name just a few?

Now 83 years of age, Des is a versatile all round showman whose latest tour gives an insight into his long career on stage and television.

The evening starts off on a dodgy note with Des telling the audience to participate in the show by inviting them to ask him questions, a request which is greeted with a stony silence.

As the anecdotes and gags roll off the memory machine, he pretends that the whole show is completely off the cuff, something that nobody believes and his reception becomes more strained which is saved by the arrival of a four piece band in the second half of the evening.

With film clips of some of his more memorable meetings with the likes of Freddie Starr and Norman Wisdom, Des is shown as a likeable and talented television host and comedian who has a pretty good singing voice into the bargain.

He revives precious old memories for the audience when he sings classics like Crazy, Black Magic and Young at Heart, laudable for a man nearing the end of a long career.

With a guest appearance of his latest wife, Jodie, a singer who performs an excellent rendering of the Dolly Parton hit song I Will Always Love you, the show finally makes the grade as an evening of reminiscence and affection.
