THE New Hardy Players are preparing to celebrate their tenth anniversary by bringing to life Thomas Hardy’s tale of intrigue, hope and destiny on Egdon Heath in a new adaptation of The Return Of The Native.

Howard Payton’s imaginative production features young local acting and musical talent, and will be performed outdoors in four beautiful and evocative West Dorset locations.

This production features a cast of 34 and band of 12 musicians, whilst remaining true to Hardy’s original novel.

The players’ ages range from 8 to 80, and this year young local talent, three of whom are still at school, fills five principal roles.

The Return of the Native is a compelling tale of fatal attraction set in the brooding landscape of Hardy’s childhood, Egdon Heath.

It is the story of a proud and passionate girl, Eustacia Vye, who lives with her grandfather in a secluded house on a lonely heath. She desperately wants to leave, but has no means of doing so.

When Clym Yeobright returns from Paris to his mother’s cottage on the heath, Eustacia sees him as her rescuer, who will take her away from Egdon. The actions of both characters are influenced by Damon Wildeve, the retired engineer and Landlord of the Quiet Woman Inn, and by Clym’s ambitious and determined mother Mrs Yeobright.

The first performances, which are both sold out, will be next Thursday and Friday at Thomas Hardy's home in Dorchester.

However, tickets are still available for a performance at Minterne House in Minterne Magna on July 11, Lulworth Cove on July 16 and 17 and Watercombe House near Owermoigne on July 18.

Picnics are welcome from 6.30pm, and performances start 7.30pm. It is advisable to bring suitable clothing, a blanket or chair to sit on, and a torch.

Tickets are £10 in advance or £12 on the gate, with discounted tickets available to under 12s for £7.50, and family tickets (2 + 2 under 12s) for £30.
