AN HISTORIC theatre is undergoing a facelift.

The wonderful architecture of Mayflower Theatre will be hidden under a mass of scaffolding for 15 weeks from the beginning of September as repair and maintenance work is carried out on the exterior of the building.

The theatre remains open all through the building exterior maintenance works with a packed autumn season including popular The Glenn Miller Story starring Tommy Steele, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Lord of the Flies.

Mayflower Theatre chief executive Michael Ockwell said: “We are investing half a million pounds into the renovation and maintenance of our beautiful theatre.

"As a charitable Trust we continue to re-invest into the physical building to preserve and maintain a thriving theatre for our local community for years to come and we have further investment plans for 2017."

The theatre was built in 1928 as the Empire Theatre, by T. R. Milburn; an architect who designed a number of theatres in the UK such as Sunderland Empire and London’s Dominion Theatre.
