A SPECTACULAR ballet is being brought to a big screen in Dorchester.

It is being screened at 7.15pm on September 22 at the Plaza Cinema.

Kenneth MacMillan's ballet of Romeo and Juliet enters its 50th year with as much power and resonance as always.

The choreographer's famous version of Shakespeare's romantic tragedy set to Profofiev's magnificent score opens the 2015/16 Royal Opera House's latest live cinema season.

Adam Cunard, the cinema's managing director, said: “We're looking forward to another successful season screening the Royal Opera House's productions.

“Their shows are rightly popular with our audiences who appreciate seeing such top class performers at their local cinemas.”

The female lead role in Romeo and Juliet is taken by a principal dancer of the Royal Opera, Sarah Lamb.

Sarah has created many roles in the nine years since she was made a principal and has also won several international awards.

She will be helping to bring to vibrant life the tragic tale of star-crossed lovers in a ballet which is a 20th century classic.

This Romeo and Juliet is rich in the swaggering colour of Verona street life and in sword fights and celebrations, but MacMillan keeps his focus on the complex emotions of the young lovers – especially on Juliet as she moves from the delirious happiness of first love to a shocked, adult perception of her fate.
