THE NATIONAL Theatre will screen a wild comedy of love and cash in Bridport tonight (3).

Simon Godwin, from Man and Superman, directs The Beaux's Stratagem, shown live at the Electric Palace.

George Farquhar's tale has been given a modern makeover. The production is an energetic new take on a classic play and has already received critical acclaim.

The story centres around The 'Beaux' - Mr Aimwell and Mr Archer, two charming, dissolute young men who have blown their fortunes in giddy London.

Shamed and debt-ridden, the duo flee to provincial Lichfield where their 'stratagem' is to marry for money.

Lodged at the local inn, posing as master and servant, Aimwell and Archer encounter a teeming variety of human obstacles. These include a crooked landlord, a fearsome highwayman, a fervent French Count, a maid on the make, a drunken husband, a natural healer and a strange and turbulent priest.

But they find that their greatest obstacle is love. When The Beaux meet their match in Dorinda and Mrs Sullen, they appear to be most at risk. The duo discover that in love, they might be truly discovered.

George Farquhar’s final play is a fabulous carnal comedy.

Aimwell will be portrayed by Samuel Barnett and Archer will be played by Geoffrey Streatfield. Pippa Bennett-Warner will take on the part of Dorinda, while Esh Alladi will play Bagshot.

The doors at the Electric Palace will open at 6pm for a 7pm start.
