CHRISTMAS going all the way back to the 1600s is coming to Sherborne Abbey on December 5.

Sherborne Chamber Choir will be performing a Baroque Christmas at Sherborne Abbey on December 5.

Two festive and colourful works from the early and mid-seventeenth century make up the programme.

Praetorius’s Mass for Christmas Day is a reconstruction of a mass as it might have been performed on Christmas Day in Germany around 1620.

Schütz’s setting of The Christmas Story is a similarly colourful work written in 1660 narrating and commenting on the story of the birth of Christ, complete with parts for shepherds, angels, Herod, the Wise Men and more, all taken by members of the choir.

The choir will be joined by two of the UK’s top Early Music ensembles, In Echo and the Altenburg Ensemble, who between them play a wide variety of Baroque instruments. The concert will use the Abbey’s space to the full, with the five trumpets performing from the West end steps of the Abbey.

Tickets for the concert are priced from £5-£20, students under 18 free, and are available from Sherborne Tourist Information Centre, Digby Road, Sherborne, 01935 815341.
