A CONCERT will be held in memory of a cherished music director of Dorchester Choral Society.

The Christine Page Memorial Concert is at St Mary's Church in Edward Road on Saturday December 12 at 7.30pm.

Christine, music director with the society for 15 years, died in April and is sadly missed. Society spokesman Anthony Gannon said: "Audiences and performers will remember her electrifying control from the podium, her grace and vitality – the latter enabling her to conduct Handel's Messiah last December despite illness.

"Dorset's musical world owes Christine a large debt."

Christine graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music in singing and pianoand eventually joined English National Opera culminating as soloist in England and America.

Returning to Dorset she founded VOICEWORKS to revive school and community singing.

Success came through the many thousands of children encouraged to sing, and in conducting large-scale Dorset choirs of children at the Albert Hall on four occasions.

Mr Gannon added: "Her years with DCS honed our skills and ability to tackle major works in highly acclaimed performances.

"A legacy that we cherish. We are blessed that Colin Howard, long-time friend of DCS and Christine, conducts us again. His continuity as our Director is very welcome.

"Our concert pays tribute in the rich harmonies of Durufle's Requiem and the orchestra's playing of Elgar's Nimrod – that most tender of all Enigma Variations.

"Brahm's motet O Heiland Reiss changes the mood before the main work – Elgar's Music Makers.

"This is an evocative and emotional masterpiece as Christine had planned 'a big romantic work'. She would have applauded and been touched by this choice.
