FOLLOWING their success with previous productions in Dorset theatres the Milton Musical Society are returning this week with a spectacular production of Joseph Stein’s award-winning West End hit Fiddler on the Roof.

Set against the social upheaval of Tzarist Russia, a small Jewish community is struggling to keep its traditional way of life.

Tevye, the local milkman, has been blessed with five daughters.

He and his wife, Golda, are anxious to see all of them make good marriages, so he asks Yente, the local matchmaker, to find five suitable husbands for them.

The problem is that all the five girls have other ideas and each in turn determines to find their own husbands.

Fiddler on the Roof was one of the first Broadway musicals to deal with serious social issues like persecution, poverty and keeping to one’s beliefs.

The music is heavily influenced by traditional Jewish folk music, balanced by some of the most humorous lyrics to grace any hit show.

n The Fiddler on the Roof is running at the Regent Centre everynight at 7.30pm today until Saturday April 23.Call 01202 499199 for tickets or visit regentcentre.co.uk
