ALBUM REVIEW
KATIE MELUA
IN WINTER
KATIE Melua has teamed up with the Gori Women's Choir to perform this stripped-down seasonal concept album.
The album was recorded in a DIY studio that Katie and her producer built themselves.
It's not a Christmas affair, more a 'leaving footprints in the snow and coming inside for tea and teacakes with your feet up in front of the fireplace' concept.
Stand-out track is Dreams on Fire with the philosophical line 'if all your dreams were on fire, which one would you save?' This is the song - and the line- you just can't get out of your head.
While Joni Mitchell's River has been covered many a time, Melua's version with the 24-strong choir adds warmth and power to a once delicate number.
This is far from the material Melua's fans will be familiar with and the forays into Rachmaninoff and into Georgian folk music such as Tu Ase Turpa Ikavi, whilst at first seem stark, add to the haunting feel of the album.
