FIVE artists and designer-makers will be opening the doors to their purpose-built studios at the St. George's Centre, Reforne on Portland.

The studios will be open over the weekend on April 22 to 23 between 10am and 4pm alongside the centre's annual open day.

There will be a chance to meet artists and designer-makers Ian Baird, Lyn Kirkland, Caro Lester, Rory Pilgrim and Tiffany Scull and take a look at their studio set-ups.

The artists involved are all at varying stages of their careers, some emerging practitioners and others more established locally and abroad, with a diverse mix of practices and styles.

There will be a wide range of work-in-progress on show, including sgraffito ceramic vessels, encaustic wax painting, hand-carved spoons, film and music, printmaking and drawing.

The Open Studios is held in conjunction with the Isle of Portland Heritage Trust's annual Open Day on Saturday 22rd April at the St George's Centre. This year celebrates the 160th anniversary of the opening of the original St George's School on the site in April 1857. Royal Manor Workshops' craft groups, Portland Camera Club, Portland Local History Centre, dance schools and community choirs will be amongst those taking part.

The Grade II listed buildings have been carefully restored and maintained by the Trust, a charity reliant on volunteers. The halls are available for hire for activities, clubs and special occasions: contact 01305 823406 for rates.

Last year's event saw a continual flow of visitors, and made for a great day out. The studios were purpose built in the 1980s for rent by local artisans to help establish small creative businesses. The Isle of Portland Heritage Trust works hard to continue to offer this opportunity, as well as providing an excellent venue for a range of thriving community activities.
