DORSET SECRET BEACHES
CHURCH OPE, PORTLAND
A GENUINE smugglers cove that is believed to be the landing site of the first ever Viking raids on the British Isles, Church Ope is situated beneath the ruins of Rufus Castle on the sheltered eastern side of Portland.
Colourful beach huts are dotted along the cliff side and this peaceful little cove offering sanctuary from the prevailing wind and opportunities for swimming, snorkelling and fishing.
Rufus Castle overlooks the cove and the ruins of Old St Andrew’s church can be reached by steps and footpaths from cove. The area is a haven for bird watchers and dolphins have sometimes been sighted in the Channel.
