CAREERING towards four Dorset village halls in February is the fabulous two-handed theatre company Publick Transport with their first ever production, 20,000 Leagues Under the Office.

Publick Transport’s hit debut show is a physical comedy about two office workers on their way to a humdrum meeting, who unexpectedly find themselves stuck in a lift – and it’s hurtling towards the centre of the earth.

Imminent disaster turns into voyage of self-discovery as the duo resort to desperate phone calls, attempts at mind over matter, displays of heroism, confessions of love, stupid jokes, ingenious bracing positions and other coping mechanisms.

However, all is not what it seems, and the characters, as well as the audience, soon find themselves sifting through many strata of deception – necessary bi-products of a situation that are both absurd and unstageable.

What remains? A surreal and hilarious show with time, space, genre, narrative, language, theatrical conventions and audiences’ expectations.

The show is being brought to Dorset by Artsreach, the county’s performing arts charity.

Spokesman Delphine Jones said: “Publick Transport’s mission is not to bore audiences or themselves.

“This meditation on life, with verbal slapstick, visual wisecracks and vertiginous melodrama, promises a brilliant performance for all over the age of 10.”

The show will be at village halls in Frampton on Thursday, February 4 (call 01300 321008), Burton Bradstock on Friday, February 5 (call 01308 897214), Martinstown on Saturday, February 6 (call 01305 889059) and Halstock on Sunday, February 7 (call 01935 83347). Shows start at 7.30pm.
