Dorchester Drama prepare for farce and fun

Following their recent huge success with Treasure Island, Dorchester Drama have announced an unusual programme for 2010.

Chairman Peter Wheeler said: “We have an exciting varied programme which should have something for everyone.

“In the summer we are returning to the Roman Town House, which we think will make the ideal setting for Shakespeare’s classic Julius Caesar, with Steve Twinn making his director debut for the group.

“Then in the autumn we will be in the Corn Exchange where Anne Reeve will be back directing John Mortimer’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol.”

The drama group are at present in rehearsals for their first production of the year Out of Focus, by Peter Gordon, which will be performed in the Parish Centre in Culliford Road, North.

The play is being directed by Dorchester Drama stalwart Trevor Williams, who says he is very much looking forward to getting his teeth stuck into the meaty script of the fast-paced comedy.

He said: “Dorchester Drama has a reputation for putting on great farces and this is no exception.

“It is a showcase for our actors who play a variety of very funny characters. It is a fast moving comedy which the cast are having great fun with in rehearsals and it will be great fun for all who come.”

Out of Focus is set in the annexe of a church hall, where a series of over-bookings have occurred. A wonderful mix of characters from the local community descend on the hall for a Brownies sleepover, a badminton game, table tennis match and an illustrated talk on steam locomotives, each claiming their rightful place.

Confusion reigns until everyone finally unites for a new community project. In the ensuing weeks alliances are formed and switched as the play reaches its hilarious climax.

Production manager David Reeve is also looking forward to the challenges of the play.

He said: “Designing a church hall set within the Parish Centre sounds straight forward but we wanted to use the space in an innovative way.”

Out of Focus is on Wednesday, March 24 and Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27 at the Parish Centre, Culliford Road, Dorchester at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from Words Etcetera, Cornhill, Dorchester and on the door.
