Rock legend Steve Howe comes to Bridport's Electric Palace

FOR nearly 40 years, Steve Howe has been at the forefront of rock music as a model and inspiration for other guitarists and musicians.

He is best known as a member of the progressive rock group Yes and, in more recent years, the reformed Asia.

But he also has the highly-acclaimed Steve Howe Trio, when he shares a stage with his drummer son Dylan and hammond organ maestro Ross Stanley.

The trio is coming to Bridport this week when, drawing on a shared love of jazz, blues and country, they will play a set of Steve Howe compositions, Yes hits and the hard bop jazz of Dylan Howe and Ross Stanley.

“My trio has begun to fulfil a dream. I’ve daydreamed that I would gradually lean my guitar style towards the great jazz influences that I’ve so marvelled at over the years,” said Steve.

“I’ve been really looking forward to touring with the trio because last year I was too busy with Yes and Asia to do anything with it. This year will help make it a more productive year as far as the trio is concerned.”

The trio began life in 1993 and Steve says there is an additional enjoyment in working with Dylan.

“Making music with a member of your family is unique and special. You build a special telepathy with your family and when you are playing on stage that really comes into its own.

“The children have been a joy to my wife and I and whenever I feel a bit down, I think about the fact that we have four healthy children so we must have been doing something right.”

Although the band has its roots in jazz, Steve is adamant they won’t be playing the old ‘standards’.

“We won’t be playing Misty. I wanted to do something a bit different but we will also be playing Yes music because I can’t escape from it – not that I would want to.”

The Steve Howe Trio will be playing at the Electric Palace on Sunday, March 21. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start and tickets cost £15 plus concessions.

n Brighton-based singer Danni Nicholls is also appearing at the Electric Palace this week.

Her songs are apparently ‘guaranteed to melt your heart and the soles of your cowboy boots’ and she has a growing reputation as a woman to watch.

She is at the Palace bar on Friday, March 19, and admission is free.
