INSIDE Out festival returns next month with 10 days of extraordinary outdoor events to transform some of the county’s most iconic urban, rural and coastal locations. Performances are planned for Maumbury Rings in Dorchester, as well as Bournemouth Square and town centre, Poole Quay and Winspit quarries at Worth Matravers.
The first preparation event, an artist-led workshop for youngsters aged between 10 and 14, takes place on Monday, August 23, at Lulworth Heritage Centre.
A taster for The Rock Charmer and led by Nic Rawling from Paper Cinema, participants will create Jurassic creatures made from reclaimed and recycled materials found on the coast. Inside Out artistic director Bill Gee said: “Inside Out 2010 continues our ethos of presenting extraordinary events in extraordinary places, which started with the first festival in 2007 and the one-off event in Weymouth in 2008. “Tens of thousands of people have been amused, inspired and mesmerised by Inside Out events and we hope people from Dorset and further afield will join us this year.”
Among the treats is a residency and performance by contemporary circus company NoFit State, who will be bringing their Parklife to Maumbury Rings in Dorchester.
The show is a celebration of the secret life of parks, featuring the public. After a week working with community groups, the public’s talents will be revealed in the finale show, complete with pyrotechnics, aerial artists, dance and music. Inside Out 2010 begins with the world premiere of Congregation in Bournemouth. This is a new video installation that turns pedestrians into performers as they interact with projected images, colours and shapes. Another highlight will be The Rock Charmer at Winspit, an atmospheric after-dusk experience created for one of the Jurassic Coast’s most remarkable locations. Inspired by the drama of this unique landscape, The Rock Charmer combines the accordion playing of Finnish musician Kimmo Pohjonen with magical animations by Dorset-based Paper Cinema. The performance takes place at the former quarrying site of Winspit, which the audience is led to from the historic Square and Compass pub in Worth Matravers. Poole Quay will feature a procession by French company Quidams, present a beautiful spectacle in which giant white figures silently explore their surroundings in search of light.
