Trilogy focuses on human life
THREE ONE-ACT PLAYS,
Royal Manor Theatre, Portland
by MARION COX
ASPECTS of the human condition are skilfully revealed in this trilogy of dramas that highlight the very different ways people react to their circumstances.
Harold Pinter's The Lover takes a swing at marriage as a seemingly conventional couple each openly indulge in steamy extra-marital affairs, or do they? As the frisson of forbidden love is played out, it becomes clear that only one of them is truly faithless, but which one?
After Midnight - Before Dawn by David Campton goes back to the witch-burning era of 400 years ago where six people are in prison awaiting execution. As they each face the hangman's noose, the chance to escape death by embracing the devil's promises are agreed upon at any price. One blindly accepts; the others all grapple with their fate with varying degrees of hysteria.
The final play, Arthur, comes from the pen of Royal Manor group member Eileen White who calls upon her own observations to capture a snapshot of bereavement. When an old man's wife dies, he relies heavily upon the company of his neighbour to cope.
Leonard and Elfrida Strom are neatly cast as the elderly pair in a gentle comedy with a touch of sadness that in some ways summarises all three plays in this ambitious and well staged production that continues for the rest of the week.
