CHILDREN are being invited to pick their nose and break wind during the latest show to hit Lighthouse in Poole.

Fungus the Bogeyman is based on Raymond Briggs's book of the same name about a working class bogeyman who lives underground and earns his living by scaring humans.

Fungus is played by actor Eamonn Fleming, who says he adored the book when it was first published in the mid-1970s.

"I loved it then and kids still love it today," he said.

"The director Marcus took the book as the starting point for the play and we have moved on from there.

"It is more upbeat than you might expect, otherwise it would take place in a pitch-black theatre that stank. It is a lot of fun - and not your average kids' show."

Fungus is a member of the Bogey society, which is very similar to British society except that Bogeymen enjoy the inverse of that which humans (called Drycleaners because of their perverse environmental preferences) appreciate. Therefore, they like filth instead of cleanliness, vile smells instead of perfume and slimy, rotten food instead of crisp, fresh produce.

The tale is as treasured by today's youngsters as it was when it was first published, and audiences have been flocking to see Eamonn's Fungus.

"We do get a lot of parents who read it when it first came out coming along and bringing their own children," he said. "It was a cult hit then and is just as popular now.

"For anyone under the age of 10, it's a rioters' charter, really.

"There are songs and audience participation, but it must be the only place where children are encouraged to pick their nose and fart. It's pure comedy for kids and they love it."
