Dance Scene . . . returning to Bridport Arts Centre
Dance Scene . . . returning to Bridport Arts Centre

A NUMBER of places are still available for Summer Dance Scene - the sensational dance summer school at Bridport Arts Centre.

For 2008, the summer school will comprise of an exciting mix of dance styles taught by professional artists from London and Dorset.

The week is open to anyone aged 15 and above with at least three years of dance training, and in a bid to encourage more boys to take part, there are subsidised places for any aspirant Billy Elliotts out there.

Organiser Nikki Northover, a dance teacher, explained: "I want to encourage more boys to take part. There are a lot of boy dancers out there - I have eight boys in the class I teach and they are fantastic, but there is still something of a stigma about male dancers and I want to break through that.

"This is also a fantastic opportunity for young lads to be taught by male dancers and we have two of the best here for Summer Dance Scene."

Classes taught throughout the week will include contemporary, physical theatre, jazz and street dance.

This year's artists include Xavi Monreal, a hip hop dancer and choreographer from Barcelona who currently teaches street at Pineapple Dance Studios in London.

He will be joined by Brazilian Tiago Gambogi, a physical theatre artist, dancer and actor, and Bridport-based Niki McCretton who is an award-winning performer.

Xavi will lead classes in street and hip hop. After years of experience of hip hop and jazz, Xavi has created an exciting and unique fusion where the grace of jazz is mixed with the groove of hip hop R'n'B with a little old school and funk thrown in for good measure.

As well as a choreographer for Nike, Xavi has been a dancer for Jamelia, Dido and Emma Bunton and has taught street and hip hop workshops throughout Europe.

Tiago is a passionate Brazilian dancer, actor, choreographer and joint artistic director of the physical theatre company f.a.b - The Detonators, who are regular performers here in Dorset.

He trained at Laban Centre in London and has worked with various artists and companies nationally and internationally. His work is experimental and continually crosses over the boundaries of contemporary dance, theatre and live art.

Niki McCretton will lead two days of contemporary dance based on contact improvisation. Participants will be able to try out their own choreographic ideas to create dance pieces. Niki is an experienced teacher of dance and physical theatre and has created many solo and duet works of her own, which have toured nationally and internationally.

Nikki Northover added: "Summer Dance Scene is a great thing for youngsters who really want to dance - and it is right on their doorstep.

"It is a huge opportunity - why go to London for a dance school with international stars when you have them right on your doorstep?"

Summer Dance Scene takes place at Bridport Arts Centre from Monday to Friday, August 11 to 15. The days run from 10am until 4pm and the week costs £80 and £65 for siblings, £25 for boys.

To book a place please contact Bridport Arts Centre box office on 01308 424204. For any enquiries contact the Summer Dance Scene organiser Nikki Northover on 07765 971357.
