WHERE: Sherborne Abbey, Sherborne
DETAILS: Here’s another in our series of fabulous free places to enjoy in Dorset.
Sherborne Abbey, in Abbey Close, is one of only 18 churches awarded five stars in Simon Jenkins’ England’s Thousand Best Churches. He writes: “I would pit Sherborne’s roof against any contemporary work of the Italian Renaissance.”
The abbey was founded by St Aldhelm in AD 705 and is now known as the ‘cathedral of Dorset’.
There is still time to catch a guided tour before they end at the end of this month. They take place on Fridays at 2.30pm and Tuesdays at 10.30am. The abbey is open from 8am to 6pm. See sherborneabbey.com
