I've just come back from a public meeting held at St Nicholas Church Hall, about the closure of Castle Cove Beach.
Just under 80 people turned up, and they were angry. A councillor explained why the council had closed the beach - it was apparently done on the basis of a wide-ranging survey of Portland Harbour, which indicated potential erosion over the next 100 years – a timescale and geographical area which seems an odd basis on which to allow a beach to be closed.
Of particular interest to residents in Old Castle Rd is the fact that, if the road is about to degrade as the council apparently believe, then those people at the end of Old Castle Rd will be marooned as the road disappears, unless it is restored and shored up.
And if the road is restored and shored up, then a new access to the beach could be installed at the same time.
