I must take issue with Lloyd Hatton's (Young Greens) letter regarding the Greenhill chalets. He clearly does not understand either the council’s financial position or the current proposal. There is no intention to sell off the Greenhill Gardens. They will continue to be owned, cared for and maintained by the borough council and will be accessible to local residents and visitors. No way will the gardens, chalets and associated facilities be closed to public access.

What the council is doing is taking steps to have the chalets restored in order to enhance their use and indeed increase their number.

A member of the public recently described the chalets as an ‘eyesore’.

The council has already lost £2million per annum of government funding, with a further £3million per annum cut by 2020. As a result it simply does not have the required funds to bring the chalets up to an acceptable standard.

The solution is to find a partner who will invest to secure the long term viability of the chalets, cafe and public toilets by way of a long term lease. The partner can be either a community group or a commercial enterprise and the council is currently seeking tenders from both categories.

Please stop the scaremongering and focus on the facts.
