MICHAEL J Tilley presents a powerful case for the construction of the Western Relief Road in your issue of 12 January.
In the late 1980s Dorset County Council prepared detailed plans and sections of the proposed road, which were placed on public display in Weymouth. If my memory serves, the proposal required no tunnelling and only at one point towards Portland Road did it run close to the Fleet.
Having gone so far, why was the proposal not implemented?
I think it possible that the closure of the Admiralty establishment on Portland at about that time was the determining factor.
Today however developments at Portland Port and great residential development on the Island have more than replaced that loss.
I agree with Michael Tilley that the road is essential to the future of Portland and to the relief of heavy traffic on Portland Road and Boot Hill in Weymouth.
