JEFFREY W Heintz (Letters, February 21) writes from Maidenhead to tell us what is wrong with Weymouth, and how he can fix it by redeveloping the Pleasure Pier.
He begins plausibly enough - we certainly do need economic regeneration - but he soon falls off his perch. First, no doubt regurgitating an expression he has heard from misguided councillors, he refers to the site as a “peninsula” when it is not.
It is simply a pier (the clue is in the name) with some infilling. And then he suggests a new marina with berths “along the river”. The river?! Perhaps Mr Heintz is confusing Weymouth with Maidenhead.
We soon realise that his letter is nothing more than an advertisement for a bid by some anonymous outfit to make money from Weymouth. In a transparent attempt to persuade us, he promises great riches in return: £125m investment plus £20m a year.
But although he claims his proposal is “derisked”, he makes no mention of the multimillion pound cost of flood defences that would be required, publicly funded, to safeguard his investment.
Zum vo’k do zeem to think we’m a soft touch down yer. Well, we bain’t, zur.
