There is sympathy for Sophie Easton returning home after seven months at university and being shocked at the state of the seafront. (‘Seafront lasers are monstrous’, Echo, April 9). No doubt she has some sympathy too for the residents of Weymouth who have had to watch the famous seafront gradually deteriorate. Not only do the laser posts stick out like a sore thumb, they are placed ridiculously close to the new lamp posts. It would seem there is nobody with a grain of common sense amongst council officers, councillors or planners when deciding where the laser posts should be placed. It is just plain daft to place them so close to lamp posts.

If we are to tolerate these ugly and drab structures – I agree they could have been painted to blend in much better – then at least they could have been evenly spaced between the lamp posts, it is hardly rocket science. If small parts of the flower beds needed to be removed to facilitate more sensible placement of the laser posts, why hesitate after the granting of approval for so much general disruption the town has suffered over recent times?

We regularly read uncomplimentary letters from visitors to the town at what has gone on. Now the visitors, along with the local residents, have to endure the sight of caravans being parked on the seafront, hindering views from the hotels and guest houses and forming an unnecessary obstacle course for anyone wishing to stroll along the promenade.

Hopefully Sophie Easton will enjoy her short break from university, but what she will see on any later visit home is anybody’s guess.
