Recently the Echo has published a number of letters from people who wish Christian prayers to be included as part of council meetings, the latest being from John Figg (Letters, April 17).

I would like to remind your readers that Britain is essentially a secular state, in that no one particular religion is allowed to have a special influence over the way we are governed.

Thus the business of the council has nothing to do with religion, as recognised by the legal ruling in the Devon case.

If you want to see what happens when religion and government are not kept separate then I suggest you look at the ‘troubles’ in Northern Ireland.
