Town centre to welcome farm market

DORSET Farmers' Market is setting up its stalls in Dorchester town centre for the first time tomorrow.

Producers of some of the county's finest fare will be trading in South Street from 10am to 4pm.

Lower South Street and adjoining New Street will be closed to traffic.

Market manager Kevin Crocker said: "We are really pleased to have been invited to trade in South Street so that visitors to Dorchester's beautiful town centre can experience the wonderful choice of local food and drink on offer.

"Some of our producers will be cooking food to eat and as an added bonus part of the pitch fee is to be donated to Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance."

The WI producers - Country Markets - will also have a stand and the local band Jigsaw will be performing.

Alistair Chisholm, president of the Chamber of Commerce, said he was delighted the traders would be in a town centre setting.

He said: "There is the regular farmers' market at Poundbury but it will be good to have them in the middle of town.

"We had the French market last summer, which was a great success, and this is a chance to buy direct from Dorset's own producers, here in the county town."

Among the goodies on sale will be Bridport Pies, pork and sausages from Pampered Pigs, bread from Oxfords bakery, Manna Organic's ready meals and puddings, coffees from Dorset Coffee Co, along with Woolsery Cheese, cider and apple juice, beef and lamb, honey and bee products.
