Charity boss is jailed

A CHARITY boss who funded a lavish lifestyle by stealing £150,000 intended to help disabled children and adults in Dorset has been jailed for two years and nine months.

Finance chief John Cunningham helped himself to Dorset Scope's money over a three-year period, cashing cheques at the charity's bank and creating false invoices to cover his tracks.

He spent the stolen money on a rented flat in upmarket Sandbanks, fast cars, two motorbikes and flying lessons, leaving his salary untouched.

He told colleagues he had business interests elsewhere to explain his extravagant lifestyle, but turned himself in at Poole Police Station in January, 2007.

The 35-year-old, who now lives with his parents in Ferndown, earlier admitted one count of theft totalling £150,000 from Dorset Scope, which supports children and adults with cerebral palsy who have physical and learning disabilities.

During a hearing at Bournemouth Crown Court, Judge John Beashel jailed him for two years and nine months and told him he would serve half that sentence before being released on licence.
