Warnings over bogus officials
BURGLARS pretending to be water board officials haven stolen money after tricking their way into the homes of two elderly women.
An 80-year-old woman in Manston Road, Sturminster Newton, was kept occupied by a man who pretended to be an official as unseen accomplices stole money, said police.
A man of similar description then used the same excuse to enter the home of a 93-year-old woman in Littlefields, Sherborne, the same day and again unseen accomplices searched her home and stole money.
Detective Constable Margaret Lavender, of Weymouth CID, said: "From the description of the man, I'm sure it was the same man at both addresses and I've also been told that the man was seen running off with two teenage boys.
"The trickster pretends he needs access to the water supply in the house and cajoles his victims into the kitchen area while unseen accomplices search other rooms in the house where they find and steal money. They know all the hiding places."
They may be linked to two similar incidents in Somerset, she said.
The suspect is white, 5ft 2in, in his early 30s, slim-built with short fair and a thin face. He wore a long sleeved T-shirt with blue and pink horizontal stripes and light grey or blue jeans.
Witnesses can call police on 01305 222222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
