Another boulder falls on road
A BOULDER weighing between 200 and 300 pounds fell off a lorry on Portland.
Police said the 'enormous lump of stone' fell on to a pavement in Chiswell yesterday morning.
It is the second such incident on the island in a week - last Friday a two-ton piece of rock fell off a lorry and damaged a parked vehicle in Easton Square.
A Dorset Police spokesman said the lorry lost the stone shortly before 10am yesterday.
She said no one was hurt and that the vehicle driver arranged for the boulder to be recovered.
Emergency engineer Rod Wallis, from Weymouth, was leaving Portland when he spotted the piece of stone.
He said: "It must have weighed between 200 and 300 pounds and it had fallen straight on to the pavement.
"It was so lucky that no-one was walking along there at that moment, because they would have been killed instantly.
"You watch these lorries coming down the roads with these huge loads and there's never any netting over the top."

How really alarming,did the driver know?
Another frightening scenario is seeing a tailgate open,car in motion and a poor dog in the back gripping on with his toenails whilst the driver is oblivious to what is going on.
Another one is car doors not secured properly, usual elderly occupants in the back leaning and unaware they could fall out- or white van man losing half his tools alsation and the rest because the back doors are wide open!!
How really alarming,did the driver know?

Trubelle rather misses the point. These huge lorries with stone piled on the back are speeding through narrow streets in Easton and Underhill, dropping part of their loads as they go. Surely they should be better secured- with a net as your report suggests.

Why have the traffic authority not issued a warning notice to the relevent firm the next step could then to be to remove their operators licence that would produce the needed covering
