TV star urging train buffs to enjoy line
HE ALWAYS came up with a cunning plan' as Blackadder's put-upon sidekick Baldrick.
Now Tony Robinson has another idea - but this time it might be a good one.
The Time Team presenter and rail enthusiast reckons people should hop on the train and enjoy the delights of the Bristol to Weymouth line.
The route is listed among the star's Top 10 Great British Rail Journeys.
It might take two-and-a-half hours to travel the 80-odd miles, but Mr Robinson is full of praise for the picturesque route.
Mr Robinson's Top 10 has been unveiled as part of a Network Rail promotion to get people on the train.
Starting his journey at Bristol, Mr Robinson describes how the line enters King Alfred country into the heart of ancient Wessex'.
He says: "For the first half of the journey it runs alongside the Kennet and Avon canal.
"If you're really adventurous you can alight at Bath, walk through the Limpley Stoke Valley all the way to Bradford, and pick up the next train there; although I don't recommend it if you've got suitcases!"
On arrival at Weymouth, Mr Robinson describes how trains used to run over the harbour tramway.
He then tells of rumours that the tramway may be reopened for the 2012 Olympics.
"I wish that was true," said Barry Thirlwall, former chairman of the Weymouth-Bristol line promotion group the Heart of Wessex Partnership.
He added: "I'm delighted that Tony Robinson enjoyed his trip on the line so much.
"It reinforces the message that the partnership has been trying to get across - that it is a lovely route but also an under-used asset."
Mr Thirlwall, who is transportation policy manager for Dorset County Council, said although people describe it as a picturesque country branch line, the Weymouth Bristol railway is also an important tourist and commuter route.
He added: "After a rocky period last year the operator First Great Western is getting its act together and a train refurbishment programme is under way.
"It would be great if we could have a better timetable but we will keep plugging our case."
Other lines included in the Top 10 include Cambridge-Lowestoft, Carlisle-Newcastle and the West Highland Line.
