Teachers’ fury over SATs results errors

ANGRY teachers in Weymouth are complaining to the Government over what they claim is a catalogue of errors' over Standard Assessment Tests for pupils.

Headteachers are checking over results and said they had to send some back because of inaccuracies.

The row erupted after test results were sent out late while some are still to arrive despite being due on July 8.

The Chesil Education Partnership, which represents schools in Weymouth and Portland, has sent a letter to schools secretary Ed Balls claiming errors have caused an extremely detrimental effect on the morale of both pupils and teachers'.

Chickerell Primary School is complaining that a pack of their English papers have been mislaid after pupils were incorrectly marked as absent.

Holy Trinity Primary School said they were sent science results for a different school with the same name and are busy checking over their tests and sending some back to be re-marked.

Headteacher Mark Cheesley said he is sending letters to parents who are still expecting their child's results.

He added: "If SATs had any credibility before then it's been knocked even more.

"As well as the fact that they arrived late we get sent a load of scripts for children from a completely different school.

"We are checking over test scripts at the end of a busy term when we've got other things to do so I'm not happy.

"The Government uses these tests to see how schools are doing, but what if some of them are wrong?"

Manager of the Chesil Education Partnership Stuart Gibson is sending the letter to ask for re-assurances that the catalogue of errors' and administrative problems will be avoided in the future.

He said St Augustines Primary School has had no English papers returned while Radipole Primary School also had problems.

Schools minister and South Dorset MP Jim Knight said he would try to make sure the outstanding results are sent out.
